Summer Time’s Calling – Get Active With Your Dog

Walking the Dogs

Walking the Dogs

Other than Lassie or Rin-Tin-Tin the majority of our canine pets are not able to make better decisions than their humans! That leaves us the responsibility to protect the welfare of our trusted companions. Think for a moment about summer when you were young. I bet you have vivid memories of running, hopping or dancing across a hot black-top parking lot or roadway while bare foot. Fact: the pads of your dog’s feet are nearly as sensitive as the bottoms of our feet.

If you are walking your dog during the heat of the day place your hand palm down on the paved surface before you begin the walk. This will give you a good perspective of how to proceed.  When I am walking any dog, mine or a client’s, I walk facing traffic with the dog on my left forcing it to be off the hotter surface. If there is no way to accomplish this, walking becomes not an option and I adapt. There are games you can play with your pet that exercise their minds and not necessarily their muscles. Ten to fifteen minutes of mental stimulation for a dog is comparable to hours of exercise.

Get active with your pet! It pays dividends for you and them.
