How is 10,000 for a nice round number? Today is the 2nd National Mutt Day of 2013 and the goal is to get 10,000 mixed breed dogs adopted. Medium to large mixed breed dogs are often left to languish in shelters. What a pity because they are such good pups!
Mixed breeds are often healthier than “name-brand” dogs and are just as apt at being guide dogs, search and rescue heroes or therapy dogs. They deserve our love and affection just as much as Daisy Mae (Brittany), Luke and Trooper (English Springer Spaniels). Mixed breeds are just as loving and fun to play with too.
Maybe you don’t have room in your house for yet another dog. You can still help. Volunteer to walk some dogs at your local shelter…that helps with their socialization skills and gets them the necessary exercise. Tell others about the need. Donate a few warm blankies or chew toys. Maybe even part with a monetary donation. Small acts of service or gifts added together make large differences!
Always remember to get your dog spayed or neutered to help reduce pet over-population and the heartbreak of putting dogs to sleep before their time.
